Transfer spending by Europe's wealthiest clubs -- particularly in the Premier League -- could lead to further domination by those at the top if left unchecked, according to a CIES Football Observatory study.
CIES's March report takes into account spending in the five major European leagues -- England, Spain, Germany, Italy and France -- since the 2009-10 season, and reports that Europe's wealthiest clubs are spending more than ever before.
The 98 "big-five" league teams spent €6.9 billion on signing recruit players present in their 2009-10 squads, equating to an average spend of €70.4 million. That figure rose to €8.6 billion in 2014-15, or €87.7 million per club -- an average increase of 24.5%.
The Premier League in particular saw an increase in spending of 41.1 percent, with fees invested in signings increasing from €2.43 to €3.43 billion between 2009 and 2014 -- around €171 million per club.
